LTE TDD - universal solution for unpaired spectrum?

TDD deployments are gathering pace. An earlier GSA report I posted here, highlighted the many devices that are TD-LTE ready.
The main thing that is being emphasised is that from the standards point of view, not much additional efforts are required for a TDD device as compared to an FDD device. Of course in practice the physical layer would be different and that could be a challenge in itself.

Qualcomm published a presentation on this topic that is embedded below. Available to download from here.

  1. Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (LTE TDD) is here and 2013 is the year that the technology will really take off. But what is it, why will it take off and who is driving it forward?

Around the world several spectrum bands have been allocated to support LTE TDD. Many countries have TDD spectrum available and these spectrums are expected to trade at a lower price than their FDD equivalents. 1.9GHz, 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz are the most likely TDD spectrum bands used for LTE TDD.
LTE-TDD and its emerging role in the mobile broadband landscape gained momentum in 2012 and looks set to continue gathering pace in 2013. FDD remains the foundation of most of today’s commercial LTE services, but the early commitment to TDD by a large group of influential operators, led by China Mobile, Japan’s Softbank and India’s Bharti-Airtel, has grown into a global movement with widespread backing from mobile operators, equipment vendors, device suppliers and chipset developers.

China Mobile has emerged as a major champion for LTE TDD and a significant force behind the technology’s global adoption. Even though commercial LTE services have yet to be launched in China, the operator has been closely and actively involved in all aspects of LTE-TDD, covering standards creation, technology development, field trials and new technical advances. In 2011, GTI (Global TD-LTE Initiative) was introduced by China Mobile to create value for stakeholders across the LTE TDD ecosystem for early adoption of the technology and convergence of LTE TDD and LTE FDD. In December 2012, China Mobile Hong Kong launched the world’s first converged LTE FDD/TDD network. It has been predicted that by 2015, 25 per cent of global LTE connections will be LTE TDD, at around 89 million. So moving to LTE TDD early seems like a smart move by China Mobile.
